In 333 BC, a deep cultural revolution occurred in the Middle East. The Western Greek culture – which included science, philosophy and art – entered and merged with Eastern cultures nearby. Historians call it: Hellenism. The First hero of this process is Alexander the Great -the Emperor of the tremendous Macedonian empire. The Process of “ Hityavnut” (becoming Greek) was continued for tens and hundreds of years by the heirs of the Ptolemies and salvekiim alternately.
The Ancient Greek culture was radiant and attractive and was not easy to resist. Even the most historically prominent attempt by the Hasmoneam family to fight this culture did not quite work. Judaism has adopted important parts of the Greek mindset which affects us until this day.
During this trip, we will learn of the people who worked to promote the Greek culture in Israel: Alexander the Great, Antiochus and the Hasmoneam kingdom, we will get acquainted with the first Bible translation project- from Hebrew to a foreign language – Greek – known as the ‘Septuagint’, we will learn about the Hellenistic period, Greek mythology, we will undercover the Greek influences on the world of Judaism (Philo, Maimonides, etc.) and see some of the places where these processes took place.
Where will we visit?
